The Australian Film Societies Federation (AFSF) helps you start and run a film society or group. We provide screening rights discounts, film handling insurance, distributor access, legal guidance and a nationwide directory to member societies across the country.

What is the AFSF
The AFSF is an organisation of film groups, film clubs and film societies dedicated to promoting the interests of all film groups, clubs and societies across Australia, as well as promoting film culture, film history and film art more broadly.
This Federation provides more information about starting and running a film society or group than any other organisation in Australia, from the practical (screening rights, insurance, equipment) to the day-to-day (finding films, running an AGM, growing a membership).
History
The Federation traces its roots to 1947, when it was formed as the Federation of NSW and Associated Film Societies to help film societies share resources and speak with one voice on screening rights and distribution. Over the decades it grew into a national body and became the Australian Film Societies Federation, supporting societies in every state and territory.
- 1947 — Formed as the Federation of NSW and Associated Film Societies.
- Later years — Membership expands beyond New South Wales as societies in other states and territories affiliate.
- Today — Operating nationally as the Australian Film Societies Federation, supporting member societies with screening rights, insurance, distributor access and legal guidance.
Governance
The AFSF is run by an Executive Committee elected annually by delegates from member societies at the Federation Annual General Meeting. These experienced, informed volunteers are responsible to the membership and try to be as transparent as possible about how the Federation operates.
