2024 AFSF AGM

President’s Report on the 2024 Annual General Meeting

The 2024 AGM was held at the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) on 17 November 2024. Delegates attended both in person and using Zoom. One of the main topics of conversation was the recent changes to the the Non-Theatrical Lending Collection (NTLC) held at the NFSA. The Federation decided to ask for and to forward on any of the problems, comments or feedback reported by our members.

The Federation’s achievements in 2024

  1. The Federation negotiated with Roadshow Entertainment to keep them to a sliding scale for film societies. This stopped a number of film societies from being overcharged.
  2. The Federation contacted all our members in order to collect information on accepting payments electronically. The information was combined and put on our website. You can find it here on the How to start a film society in 60 Questions page.
  3. The Federation also contacted our members asking for updated information on the size of their groups. Collecting this information took longer than we expected. A few groups have not supplied information yet and they will be followed up in 2025.

The Committee’s plans for 2025

The delay in updating members details meant a delay in those things that we planned to do afterward. We hope to do those things this year:

  1. The Federation will contact all Australian distributors and make sure they have easy access to the AFSF Database so they can identify our members as genuine film societies.
  2. The Federation will follow up the request that was sent out to members asking them to put a link to the Federation’s website with a second one in 2025. This request will suggest different anchor text for the link.
  3. The AGM decided that information regarding the buying and selling of 16 mm projectors will be put on the Federation website.

In the election of the Committee for the 2025 year, we welcomed Jenny Cronan from the Workshop Film Group to the committee and said goodbye to Lynn Read from the Illawarra Film Society and Mary Collier from the Canberra Irish Club Film Society who both resigned from the committee. Bernard Kertesz became our Public Officer. All the other existing committee members chose to stay in their current roles.
