Crowlands Film Society

Crowlands in Western Victoria is a very small community of just 20 houses and 38 people. The nearest big town is Ararat, 24 kms away. The Society was established in 2003. Screenings are on the second Saturday of the month at 7.30.

Twice a year the local hall is transformed into a cinema with a giant screen and surround sound using 16mm. Otherwise films are shown at the Empire Private Theatre. Many folk travel large  distances to attend. Members are encouraged to dress, and a prize is frequently awarded to the best dressed.

Pre-show drinks and an old-fashioned country-style supper make up the evening. Old glass slides start the presentation and often a short will precede the feature. It’s not uncommon for patrons to stay on talking about the movie for over an hour.

Our motto is “A Motion Picture Event”.

The Society is also known as one of the nicest societies in Victoria
