Being a member makes it a lot easier for you to deal with the distributors. If you are a member, you don’t have to contact the distributors and satisfy them that you are who you say you are. We do that for you. And we keep doing it. It makes things easier for the distributors too, as they don’t have to go through the rigmarole of assuring themselves you are a bona fide group. We provide the distributors with regular updates and they accept the Federation’s continuing accreditation as their guarantee of your bona fide status.

Another benefit of being a member is that if you screen movies that are on film, you are covered by the Federation’s insurance scheme for damage or loss, without any extra cost.

The Federation also does all the heavy lifting when it comes to liaising with government and industry on issues that could have an effect on your group and its operations.

And we are always there at the end of the line when you run out of ideas on how to do something. Just send an email or pick up the phone. We may not always have the answer, but we’ll do our best.

Cost of Membership

Annual membership of the Federation runs from 1 July to 30 June the following year. It costs $50 regardless of how many members you have.

About the Federation

The Federation has member film societies all across Australia. It was established in 1947, and once known as the Federation of NSW and Associated Film Societies Inc. It was a founding member of the Australian Council of Film Societies in 1949, but severed its connection with the Council in 2012.

The Federation is an incorporated association. It is governed by an Executive of seven members comprising president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and three ordinary members. The Executive is elected each year at the Annual General Meeting, to which each member society is entitled to send two delegates. The Executive meet formally by teleconference whenever there is a need, and between meetings they keep in touch by the usual methods.
